Home Town: Middleton
Occupation: US Senator
About
In the state's tradition of progressivism and
civility in government, Senator Feingold has
been standing up for the people of Wisconsin
since he was first elected to the US Senate in
1992. Keeping the promise he made to the people
of Wisconsin when he first ran for the U.S.
Senate in 1992, Senator Feingold has held over
860 listening sessions, visiting each of
Wisconsin's 72 counties every year to hold a
town hall meeting.
These listening sessions
provide the people of Wisconsin an opportunity
to discuss issues directly with Senator
Feingold without an appointment, without making
a political contribution, and without having to
go to Washington, DC. In addition to the many
casework victories that have come out of
listening sessions over the years, these town
hall meetings have been the foundation and
driving force behind Feingold’s legislative
agenda.
His legislative priorities –
creating and protecting jobs, fighting for
affordable health care for all Americans,
working for fiscal responsibility to bring down
the federal deficit, and vigorously fighting
terrorism while also protecting the very civil
liberties that make us American – all come
directly from what he hears at listening
sessions and events around the state.
For
over 11 years, Senator Feingold has asked the
tough questions on behalf of the people of
Wisconsin. He believes that this is what he was
elected to do. Feingold is well-known for his
efforts with Senator John McCain (R-AZ) to
reform our campaign finance system, and has
been an independent and bipartisan voice in the
spirit of Wisconsin’s great Senators, William
Proxmire, Gaylord Nelson, and Robert
LaFollette.
Staying true to the promises he
first made to the people of Wisconsin when he
first ran, Senator Feingold lives in Wisconsin,
spends the majority of his time in Wisconsin,
has raised his children in Wisconsin, and
depends on the people of Wisconsin for the
majority of his campaign’s resources.
His
work is deeply rooted in Wisconsin history. In
1917, his family settled in Janesville,
Wisconsin, where Feingold was born to parents
Leon and Sylvia on March 2, 1953. Growing up in
Janesville, Feingold's political views were
shaped by discussions at the family dinner
table and his father's early involvement in the
Progressive Movement. In Janesville's public
schools, at the University of
Wisconsin-Madison, and later practicing law in
Madison and serving in the Wisconsin State
Senate, Feingold has built his life in
Wisconsin.
Feingold has two daughters,
Jessica and Ellen, and lives in Middleton,
Wisconsin.
Feingold is seeking his third
term.
